A good compromise between jungle & forest, not so far but really exotic!

COTOCOCHA

Cotococha Amazon Lodge is located 200 km east of Quito, at an altitude of approximately 500 meters. The area forms part of the Upper Amazon Basin, characterized by small Quichua communities and abundant vegetation. Due to the location near the Andes, the area is rich in tropical humid forests, one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world with a high number of endemic species in flora and fauna. The comfortable Amazon Lodge overlooks the amazing Napo River with its small islets of stones and sandy shores.

Facilities
The lodge offers 17 beautiful and spacious bungalows, built according to traditional architecture in harmony with the surrounding rainforest. All bungalows are equipped with a private bathroom with hot and cold water showers, a private veranda with reclining chairs or hammocks to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the jungle. The lodge becomes very romantic at night, with lots of candlelight around the gardens and social areas. The cosy lounge with fireplace offers comfortable seats to read or share your travel experiences with other travellers. Several tropical drinks are offered at the bar. The restaurant is partly open-air and serves great local & international food.

GARENO LODGE

Gareno Lodge has been built in the style of the indigenous Amazon people, in complete harmony with the surrounding jungle. In this Paradise of mysteries, we offer you comfort without loosing the sense of adventure. Accommodation in 4 private double cabins with private bathroom, hot-water, and balconies with hammocks, all with view over the "gareno" river.

Community Project
In September 2000 Gareno Lodge and a Quichua family signed a contract with the federation of the Huaoranis (ONHAE) to build the Lodge in their territory. It is a community project, to build up a good working community with medical assistance and education. As our guests in the Lodge, you will be giving direct help to the Huaorani community of Gareno, since half of the entrance fee directly to the federation, benefiting all Huaoranis.

Bird watching in Gareno
After a two hour drive from Tena we enter the planet's largest remaining tropical rainforest, the Amazonian Rainforest. It extends over most of the six million square kilometers of the Amazon Basin.

This, the world's greatest network of rivers and lakes, contains about 20%
of the world's fresh water and roughly 10% of all of the species of animals on earth.
Approximately 2% of the Amazon Rainforest lies within Ecuador's borders in the eastern part of the country.
Gareno Lodge is probably the most important piece of this tropical treasure on the northeastern slope of Ecuador's Amazonian Rainforest. It protects 10,000 hectares of mostly virgin terra firme forest, rolling hills, river borders and swamps.

For a forest of 10,000 hectares, it is home for more species of plants
and animals than almost anywhere else on earth.
The area where Gareno lodge is located is part of the largest Pleistocene center of endemism in the Amazon basin. This area of rainforest survived the last ice age and later repopulated the forest with species of birds, which after having evolved in isolation, were new and unique to the region.
One out of every three species of the 1,700 species of birds known to occur in Ecuador are found here in the Gareno lodge area.

We at Neblina Forest and Gareno Lodge aim to create a new public awareness of the importance of birds and how their preservation is dependent upon preservation of this unique ecosystem.
Our goal of contibuting to a better future for everyone goes hand in hand with preserving this unique region, not only for the present and for the birds, but for future generations of people in this region for years to come.

EL JARDIN ALEMAN

El Jungle Lodge El Jardin Aleman was opened in January 1996 and is surrounded by 125 ha primary and secondary rainforest. Apart from the hotel grounds, belongs to the Lodge 100 ha protected rainforest on the banks of the Napo River. The resort is built on 5 ha.
The Lodge is located on the banks of Misahuallí River, a tributary of Napo River , which forms after about 1400 km, in Perú, the Amazon.

These rivers are so called White Waters. That means that they or their tributaries rise in the Andes Mountains and they always carry sediments along. This is also why they are relatively entrophic and they look muddy and dirty because of the stirred up sediments. The opposite is Black Water. These rivers or lakes rise in the Amazon Basin by ground or rainwater; because of weathering of plants, they are very acid and dark, but clear and oligotrophic water.
The closed village to the hotel, 4 kilometers away, is  Misahuallí. For a long time Misahuallí village has seen the end of the road and the starting point for journeys into the Ecuadorian part of the Amazon rainforest, which was completely undeveloped until the discovery of petrol 30 years ago.

In the so-called upper Napo region live the indigenous Quichua. The main cultivation is among others the Yuca (the most important local staple food, a starch root), several species of bananas and rice (both imported from Asia, nowadays staple food), corn (mainly for feeding animals), coffee and cocoa (for sale) and fruits such as pineapple, papaya, citric fruits, avocado and chirimoya.
The plants, which will be presented by your guide during the jungle tours can only be a part of the unbelievable botanical diversity of the Amazon region. They are chosen because of their importance and utilization as food, medicinal plant, coloring, drug or building material for the natives.

CABAÑAS ALIÑAHUI

Alinahui means "beautiful view" in the indigenous Quichua language; in keeping with its name, the Lodge has panoramic views of the river, the Andes and three snow-capped volcanoes. The surrounding forest is renown for its exceedingly rich diversity of plant and animal species -- perhaps the richest on earth. Bird watchers will delight in the possibility of seeing and hearing many of the more than 500 species which inhabit our forest. Nature lovers and scientists return to study and marvel at the vast inventory of Alinahui's tropical life.

Guests can visit the Jatun Sacha Biological Station, walk its self-guided trails, and see the botanical gardens and tree nursery. Of special interest is on-going research on medicinal plants; over 250 species have been identified and some are being tested for commercial production.

Since Cabañas Aliñahui is a charitable organization, proceeds are devoted to resource conservation and other charitable purposes including education, research, protection, and purchase of rainforest and other natural resources. Aliñahui, with its 350 acres, was purchased in March, 1994 by Ecuador's Jatun Sacha Foundation and California based Health & Habitat. The purchase was made possible by contributions from individuals matched by the Schlinger Foundation, grants from the Children's Rainforest Organization (Barnen's Regnskog) of Sweden, the Weeden Foundation, the World Parks Endowment, and a loan from the Nature Conservancy.

Accommodation
Cabañas Aliñahui has 10 cabins for tourists distributed in 4 hectares from the 100 hectares of forest we have.
We have single, double or triple, ecological cabins. They give accommodation to 50 tourists.  The energy at the lodge is sun powered and that is why it is pretty important to preserve it.

Our cabins have and special construction designed for the weather of the region. Each cabin has 2 floors. The ground floor there are only hammocks and chairs, where you can rest, read something or enjoy of a special moment with your friends or family. All this, with the beautiful sounds of the jungle. The rooms are on the second floor. (2 rooms for each cabin). They are big, welcoming, fresh and breezy; you don’t need any ventilator. Their windows have mosquitoes nets to protect you from their bites. From the balcony you can see the inspiring and beautiful sight of the Napo River .

Besides, we have a restaurant where you can taste some delicious dishes. Breakfast and Dinner buffet.  (At lunch we serve a good sandwich, salad and lemonade). At night you could share with other tourists and drink a special liquor from the zone.

Activities
This comfortable, small resort offers guests easy access to the adjacent 150 acres of primary tropical rainforest owned by Alinahui as well as 2,500 acres at nearby Jatun Sacha Biological Station. Jatun Sacha trains local tourist guides, gives environmental education programs in nearby schools, offers field training for Ecuadorian biology students and also manages the National Herbarium in Quito.
